On August 18 in New York City, a member of the Parlament Republic of Kazakhstan, Serik Konakbaev, visited the legendary Gleason’s Boxing Gym, where his close friend Michael Kozlowski trains his fighters.
Gleason’s Gym still has a poster on the wall from the first-ever amateur WORLD BOXING CUP from 1979, where 19 year old Serik Konakbaev won his first Boxing World Cup in 63.5 kg weight category!
An outstanding boxer of the 1980′s, Serik Konakbaev (silver medalist of the1980 Olympic Games, two-time European Champion, two-time Boxing World Cup Champion) was selected as the Best Athlete of the Year by AIBA in 1981! Now a member of the Parliment Republic of Kazakhstan, Serik Konakbaev still spends a lot of his time in Boxing. He is also the Vice President Boxing Federation of Kazakhstan.
Serik Konakbaev from the age of 19 has always been very popular and now, even though he has a very high status in his country, he still has the same personality as when he started boxing.
When Serik Konakbaev visited Gleason’s Gym, my student, Juan Roman, (Juan was with me in May at the international boxing tournament hosted by Serik Konakbaev in Kazakhstan) was in area registering for the Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Tournament. He was very upset that he missed seeing Serik again.
When I told Serik that Juan was upset that he didn’t get to see him, Serik took time out of his busy schedule to meet with Juan and to wish him GOOD LUCK with his upcoming fight.
P.S. A few days later Juan Roman won the Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Tournament!
